Cloud Top Temperature Scale

This color enhanced infrared satellite image view depicts cloud top temperatures. There is a relationship with the colder cloud tops to the heavier amounts of rain, primarily in convection situations (a.k.a thunderstorms). However, high streaming cirrus clouds are very cold and could give the false representation of rain events. Overall, this color enhancement scheme does give good insights to the meteorological conditions of storm systems.
